This head-covering was my first non-scarf knitting project, and I chose it because it had a clearly historical look and an equally clear modern-day usefulness. Like the pattern's designer, I have long hair and hate wearing hats in the winter. This cap allows you to tie the head-covering on securely but also get it off without creating a lot of static electricity.
The pattern for this coif is very simple, and I found it very easy to knit, even though I was using a different yarn and different size needles than the pattern called for. My smaller needles required me to increase the number of stitches in each row to make the coif wide enough, but this turned out to be simple.
This pattern was a success because I was able to customize the pattern easily. I later ended up making a few more coifs for friends as gifts, using various yarns, including one for my sister-in-law who works as a costumed interpreter at a historic site.
