This scarf design is based on a lace pattern that had been used on some stockings owned by Elizabeth I and possibly made by Mrs. Montague. The use of the lace pattern on a scarf isn't historically authentic, therefore, but since I have little use for hand-knitted stockings in real life, I thought this would be a pleasant project.

Materials and Supplies

Elizabeth I lace pattern
One ball of lace-weight wool yarn
Size 4 knitting needles, very pointy

Construction

The Elizabeth I pattern actually includes designs for three scarves, and I am working intermittently on two of them. However, an important step in knitting lace is blocking it when you are done, which stretches out the fabric and distributes the lace stitches more evenly. I have not taken very many photos of the projects so far, because they will look very different when finished.

Results

So far, I'm pleased with the results of these patterns. They require somewhat more attention than most knitting projects--they include a chart for the lace that must be followed somewhat like an embroidery pattern. I haven't worked on these projects very quickly.
