The Tour de Brueghel

This page documents my quest to see all the extant paintings by Pieter Brueghel the Elder (not to be confused with his relatives, Jan Brueghel, Pieter the Younger, et al.). There are 40 paintings left that are commonly believed to have been painted by him. As of November 2004, I have seen 28 of them. I still have a lot of work ahead of me, though, because the 28 paintings I have seen are in 11 museums--and the 12 I have left are in 10 more.

Why Brueghel? Because he is a delightful painter whose works have been mostly lost; this makes it both important to see the ones that are left and not too daunting to attempt. Furthermore, many of his paintings are filled with delightful (or terrifying) detail that can only be appreciated from close up.

Why are the paintings in the places they are? Most are either in territories once controlled by the Hapsburgs (as Belgium was in Brueghel's day) or in collections of postwar American industrialists.

Within each section of the list below, the paintings are listed in the order they are thought to have been painted.

They unkindly refused to let me take a picture, ostensibly for copyright reasons, although I can't imagine there's much of a market for images of this painting mostly obscured by my head. Oh well--here's what it looks like.
